Emancipation from Taxes?  Not Quite...Just a Delay

The Internal Revenue Service informed taxpayers they will have until Monday, April 18, 2011 to file their 2010 income tax returns.  Normally, tax returns are due on Friday, April 15th, but due to a Washington D.C. holiday, Emancipation Day, the deadline is extended to Monday.  By law, District of Columbia holidays impact tax deadlines in the same way as federal holidays.  In addition, extensions will be extended to October 17th.

Further, as a result of the legislation passed by Congress during December, some taxpayers will not be able to file their income tax returns immediately because the Internal Revenue Service needs to reprogram their data systems. There are three groups that will have a delay:  1) taxpayers that itemize their deductions on Schedule A; 2) taxpayers that will claim the Higher Education Tuition and Fees Deduction; and 3) taxpayers claiming the Educator Expense Deduction, K–12 educators.  There should not be a delay for parents and students claiming the American Opportunity Tax Credit and the Lifetime Learning Credit.
